BYOD

(When 1:1 Just Can't Be Done)

What is it?

BYOD stands for "Bring Your Own Device".  It refers to students using the phones, tablets and ipads that they already carry for educational purposes in the classroom.

Why use it?

Schools often don't have enough technology to provide a 1:1 experience to the students.  Teachers often do not want to uproot the class to a computer lab.  Students already have the urge to be on their phones.  Use them to your advantage.

Advantages

+ no cost to the school

+ no additional software or equipment needed

+ available on any computer with internet, it doesn't require one particular computer

+ cheap graphing calculators

+ no batteries to replace

+ no need to walk down to the computer lab

+ students already know how to use the device

+ typing is much easier than on clickers

+ more engaging to the students

Disadvantages

& Solutions

- not everyone has one or wants to use their data plan (plan to work in partners or groups)

- don't use during tests (only use when you don't mind students accessing the web)

- not all websites are optimized for mobile devices (prescreen all websites you want to use)

- some students will take advantage (keep walking around to make sure they are on task)
